Claude Monet paints the painting The Magpie in 1869, for his contemporary colleagues it represents a complete break from what had been done in terms of impressionist landscapes, until then the classic elements they included remained unchanged: flowers, fields, and portraits. Although the landscape is cold, Monet has endowed it with all kinds of warm shades, the sun's rays imbue the most illuminated parts with yellow.
Monet and Snowy Landscapes
Snowy landscapes were an inspiration for Monet throughout his career. He uniquely painted the lights and shadows on various urban and rugged icy landscapes. Notable works include: The Boulevard Capucines and Stacks of Wheat in the Snow.
The Painting Today
The painting has been acquired several times, being part of three private collections until it was purchased by the French National Museums Society in 1984.
Currently, The Magpie is part of the permanent collection of the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France.
