The Lovers, Magritte

This enigmatic work shows a couple kissing, but without touching or seeing each other. Under this act of communication, the couple is actually hindered by a barrier that prevents them from feeling, touching, or seeing each other. Moreover, speaking and listening become almost impossible tasks to accomplish.
Some biographers attribute these figures to the cohabitation of the artist's parents, Léopold Magritte and Régina Bertinchamps. The marked lack of affection of the father and the depression of the mother would be the source of inspiration for this work.
